Top 10 Favorite Childhood books
Hello beautiful people!
Below is a list of our favorite bedtime stories. Over the years our copies have been marked with crayons, and include taped pages, and scuffed-up covers. We simply love how timeless they are and as I shared in my previous post ‘Angela’s Top 10 Favorite Ways to Connect with Her Kids’, story time is ALWAYS A HUGE HIT. I attached links to the titles just for fun, no commissions are going to me as that’s not the point. Looks like they are all still in print which is fantastic. As a family, we love all these stories and just wanted to share them with you!
Happy reading… and snuggling… and giggling…
The friendship between all the animals is just the sweetest. Their problem-solving skills are adorable and the way they all come together and support each other is such a heartwarming feeling of friendship. My favorite page is when the animal friends are lowering Elliot down from the dresser with a rope, wrapped in a green towel to transport his soggy body.
Just A Little Critter Collection
We read these little critter books over and over and over! His adventures are exciting to follow along, and we are always looking for his little mouse friend on every page. His stubborn and silly attitude leaves us laughing the whole time. These stories are precious because they emulate often how little children think and act, so my boys always saw themselves on the pages.
There’s an Alligator Under My Bed
Well, first Mercer Mayer is incredible! All his children's stories are fantastic. We have tons of his books, which we adore. There’s an Alligator Under My Bed is fun because it debunks the scariness that something might be under your bed. The little boy figures out a way to outsmart the alligator and win victorious for a peaceful night's sleep. As always, the sketches are vivid and make the story come to life.
by Max Lucado & Sergio Martinez
Another great author for the win! This book is on the top ten list because the underlying message is loud and clear that YOU are special, and it doesn’t matter what other people think about you. You were created beautifully and perfectly by someone who cares, and the story overall makes you feel, as a person, quite overwhelmingly special. A great message for children indeed!
The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn
This story is close to our hearts because Preston loves raccoons and even though the story is helping children work through their anxiety about going to school, the little rascal makes you fall in love with him. The special gesture at the end has become quite a tradition in our home! I’ll let you figure out what that is after you read the story.
Oh, my heart! If I had to pick just one, this would probably be it! The pictures tell the story and tucking my son in bed every night who is up to 31 stuffed animals at the time of this writing, explains how special each one is. They have quite the party, snacks, pillow fights, and snuggles! Makes me wish I could dive right inside the hardcover and come alive on the pages to join in the fun.
Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site
by Sherri Duskey Rinker and Tom Lichtenheld
This story is close to our hearts because my father was a construction worker for all my childhood and a good chunk of my adulthood. Even though boys naturally tend to like trucks and machines, this story fills in the time gap for me with so many memories of being out on the job site as a kid with my dad. I wanted to share the memories with my sons so before, during, and after I read the story, I would tell them of my real-life experience, and it just made the book special to read.
This book was my boy's dad’s favorite childhood story, so of course it became one of theirs too. The idea that your imagination can take you anywhere and make you a god, reminds every little boy that the sky is the limit on who they can become. The story also showcases the struggle at times between crazy boys who drive their mothers nuts but at the end of the day, she still loves him which is a good reminder for both mom and son!
by Mary Logue & Pamela Zagarenski
I’m pretty sure I love this more than my boys do but I don’t care. I’ve read it to them anyway. It's one of those stories where the pictures take you to another world with all the details, patterns, and colors. I have a real appreciation for art and this book lures me in through the visual. This sweet little princess goes on a journey and realizes that everyone and everything needs time to rest and sleep so she can too!
by Salley Lloyd-Jones and Jago
This is a keeper. Always! The story of God's love is woven through the pages and reminds us of who He is and how He sees us. It warms our hearts every time and leaves us pondering. Priceless!
P.S. Photo taken of Preston and his 31 stuffies!
